Program Components

Our Leadership and Advocacy Department oversees all civic engagement trainings, workshops, and educational opportunities for Adelante Mujeres participants and BIPOC community members.

Civic Leaders Training

Train and educate new and beginning leaders from communities of color to better equip them to engage in county government decision making and actively participate in the civic life of the county. Participants are provided access to and resources about county government roles and services through field trips to County Commissioners’ meetings, specialized presentations from government and/or commissioners of the county, and one-on-one mentoring with Adelante Mujeres’ leadership staff.

Immigrant Solidarity Training

Deliver a 12-hour curriculum (six, two-hour sessions) to train new and beginning leaders from communities of color (bilingual) to become Promotores. Promotores are first-line mentors and advocates to the Washington County immigrant community and to participants of Adelante Mujeres.

Environmental Justice and Leadership Program

This training is supported by Adelante Mujeres and its Leadership and Advocacy Department. Regional government agency Metro provided a grant to launch the program along with resources and support. Oregon Just Transition (OJTA) and Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling are supporting with brief trainings and resources.

This program was developed in collaboration with our Environmental Justice committee. We hope to support our participants to learn, connect, and train together to be leaders in advocating for our environment and environmental justice.

Community Organizing & Advocacy Engagement events

Deliver specialized sessions to address immediate and urgent policy needs of the community (e.g., Know Your Rights workshops).

Program Strategies

The Leadership and Advocacy Department combats the lack of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color(BIPOC) representation in local and state politics by creating and expanding BIPOC leadership empowerment through educational training, workshops, and mentorship on the policies and procedures of county governance with a focus on the policies that impact the immigrant and communities of color populations.

Our Leadership and Advocacy Department is an organizational priority. Supported by government grants, private foundations, corporations, as well as individuals.

Leadership and Advocacy is grounded in racial justice. At Adelante Mujeres, we believe that racial justice is... A human right.

Rooted in community advocacy with a collective effort to change how systems, institutions, and people interact for a just and healthy environment. To achieve our racial justice, we must... Be accountable to our Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities by advocating for policy change at the local, state, and federal level and building power among BIPOC community members.

Address intersecting oppressions to join together across issues and identities.

Why Leadership & Advocacy?

Washington County is the county with the highest number of Oregon Latinxs and with a growing diverse immigrant population. Adelante Mujeres, alongside community partners, county stakeholders, and community members, is addressing a long overdue systemic problem: the lack of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leadership representation at the local and county levels that fuels ongoing discriminatory and racist practices. Collective power is built through strong collaboratives across the county with the diverse representation of the community. Our program is led by Adelante Mujeres' Leadership and Advocacy Department. Additionally two advisory councils made up of community members, partners, and graduated participants oversee and guide the Leadership and Advocacy Department's priorities and activities.
